Hey everyone! I wanted to do a "get to know us" post and decided a fun way to do so was to answer our elopement questionnaire for you. (We're skipping some of the more detail oriented questions like addresses and vendor lists though) so you can get a sense of who we are with the same method we use to get a sense of who you are! For couples interested in booking with us, this is a great way to see a small part of the process and get a feel for what you're getting when you book with This is River Rae Photography.
Alright, let's go!
What are your love languages?
Thorin's are words of affirmation and physical touch, mine (River's) are gift giving and acts of service (this is why I ask for your addresses, so I can send you presents!)
Tell me your love story / How did you meet / What's your engagement story?
We met in our orientation group in college in 2010 and started dating a few months after school started. (You can read that story here!) When Thorin proposed he actually tricked me into thinking that he was taking a shower while we were visiting my parents house in Virginia. He went to find my then 4 year old brother and had him run into my room to play "guess what's behind my back" with some mundane items like paper clips and other random stuff. Finally, my baby brother comes in BEAMING and bouncing up and down "guess what's behind my back THIS time? " and could barely contain himself as he pulls out a little box with a bow and a post-it note that says "will you marry me? "
(I said yes)
Tell me about yourselves, what do you like to do together?
We do everything together, honestly. Literally everything. It's probably weird, but I love it. He's my twin flame and I just feel complete when we're together so doing everything together feels natural. One of my personal favorites is that we both get really excited about reading books so we either have to buy two copies of a book so we can read it together or we get the audio book so we can listen to it together and talk about it and theorize about the story. The way we struggle when one of us is reading a book that the other one isn't is pretty funny.
We're currently hooked on the Expeditionary Force (ExForce) series and highly recommend it to any Sci Fi fans.
Is there a sport/game/activity you participate in together that is meaningful to you?
YES! Thorin and I started playing hacky-sack when quarantine started in March of 2020 and we've been going strong playing almost every day for a couple hours for a year now. In the before times (pre-covid) we would go to trivia nights together. We're not huge into socializing but when we do we like to really do it. We are also both pretty deep into the climbing community!
Do you consider yourselves introverted or extroverted?
I'd like to say we're both introverted but according to every personality test I've ever taken I'm only 51% introverted. Thorin and I are both a hearty mix of introvert and extrovert depending on the situation and how tired we are. #relatable
Are you attracted to soulful, deep, romantic photos or more flirty, fun, laughing photos (or both?)
I, personally, don't think I could pick between the two, so definitely both! Thorin seems to like more flirty, fun, images since those grasp who we are as a couple. I tend to think any image of us is a good image as long as we're together.
How comfortable with public displays of affection are you?
VERY. Possibly a little too comfortable? Is that a thing?
Have you ever experienced a professional photoshoot before? How did you find the experience?
Yes, we have! We had an amazing and fun experience both times, once at our wedding and once doing an adventure session with Kathryn Cooper. It's always a little weird being on the other side of the camera for me but Thorin's used to it since I take pictures of him so often. I really enjoy being able to see myself through other people's eyes though. It's a unique opportunity.
Are you comfortable getting slightly wet, sandy, or dirty during your photoshoot?
I have no issues getting dirty, wet, sandy, whatever. Thorin is totally opposed to it though.
How do you feel about adventurous poses like piggy back rides?
I give Thorin piggy back rides all of the time, adventurous poses are what we do for fun LOL
Describe what type of photos are most important to you from your session (portraits, detail shots, destination shots, etc)
I love love love love detail shots and destination photos, Thorin is all about the destination shots and making sure we have environmental pictures with us in them.
Anything else I should know? (Disabilities, injuries, likes, dislikes, quirks, etc?)
Thorin has bad knees, he's had three knee surgeries and has donor cartilage in his knees, without which he wouldn't be able to walk! It's pretty incredible and we're beyond grateful to the individuals and their families that made it possible for him to receive this gift. In addition to that, I have a neurological pain disorder called Fibromyalgia. If you've never heard of it, it basically means I'm in pain 100% of the time and there's not much I can do about it. There's no known cure and the cause is unknown, so I'm just floating along on this little rock in space trying my best to live my dream anyways. I'd say, despite the struggles that come with chronic pain, my life is pretty damn great and I wouldn't change a thing.
